The phrase Top Link was normally used in reference to the locomotives and crews of the express trains from the days of steam. The locos would be especially prepared and kept in top mechanical and external condition for these long distance blue riband trains, and would be associated with such names as; The Royal Scot, The Flying Scotsman, The Golden Arrow, and The Cornish Riviera.
