26th December First train at Holt station | |||
On Boxing Day a "Mince Pie Special", hauled by visiting Gresley V2 60800 Green Arrow became the first service train to use Holt's new station and second platform. The station building, which is of an M&GN Wilkinson & Jarvis "office" type, has been moved brick by brick from Stalham (on the former Melton Constable to Yarmouth Beach line) to Holt. The station building is only part of the major development that is taking place at Holt, the site will eventually boast; a Midland signal box (from Upper Portland sidings), M&GN goods shed (from Thursford, which will house the "William Marriott Museum"), and a water tower. | |||

11th December Green Arrow at the NNR | |||
'Green Arrow has arrived, it will be used on driver familiarisation this weekend'. This wasn't common knowledge, but the news spread fast and a good number of people turned up for Green Arrow's first steaming. One thing is for sure,Christmas has deficiently arrived early on the NNR. I have been looking forward to the National Railway Museum's sole surviving V2, 60800 Green Arrow coming to the NNR, every since I first knew it would be spending its winter holidays down by the sea. Green Arrow is, without doubt, one of the most famous locos to have visit the NNR, and the fact that it is an LNER loco, made it all the more special for me. I arrived at midday, Green Arrow had been running light engine from Sheringham to Holt, slotting in between the Santa Specials. I finally caught up with Green Arrow at Weybourne, and was told it would be double heading later with WD 2-10-0 90775 on the 14.45 and 17.00 Santa Specials, not to be missed! It is fair to say at this point, that when 60800 and 90775 came round the curve and approached bridge 303, I have never seen such a spectacular display of steam, smoke and noise in my life! It was awe-inspiring! I think that any cobwebs that had been there scene 1936, have definitely been cleared out! | |||

18–19th September 40s Weekend | |||
Fast becoming (in my opinion) one of the NNR's best weekends of the year. This years 40s weekend was fantastic, with war re-enactments (they actually caught two Germans!), a Spitfire fly pass and with people coming from far and wide in 40s dress complete with ration books and gas masks! 3rd–5th September Steam Gala | |||
Think I'll start by mentioning the weather, it was superb! I can't remember a NNR Gala when it has been sunny for all three days, and I have been attending them for nearly 10 years! The only thing that disappointed, was the "no show" of 34081 92 Squadron. The loco was originally booked to arrive in June, but due to the extent of the work needed only arrived 8 days before the gala. The loco steamed for the first time in 10 months on 31st August, but unfortunately blew a "mud hole door seal", which put pay to any appearance at the Gala. (It is now hoped to have the loco ready for the 40s Weekend on 18–19th September). Deputising for 34081 was 8009, which on friday bore a makeshift "92 Squadron" headboard! As usual an intensive service was run on all three days, and featured the following motive power; LNER B12 61572, J15 65462, J94 8009, and War Department Austerity 2-10-0 90775. | |||

28th February The launch of Operation Phoenix | |||
28th February 1959, was a sad day in the history of the former Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway, as it saw the vast majority of the 161 mile network close. So it is with a strange sense of irony that 45 years later, 28th February will properly go down as a significant day in the history of the North Norfolk Railway, as they launch Operation Phoenix. The Holt extension was opened in 1989, but stopped three quarters of a mile short of the original Holt station which had been utilised as part of the Holt by pass. Since then very little development has happened at the site. But the amount of work that has been achieved at Holt in the last 2 years has been phenomenal Moving and rebuilding Upper Portland Sidings signal box and Stalham station, even in the last 4 months the laying/relaying of track work and the building of a new platform. This exciting development now looks set to continue at a pace. The NNR and the M&GN Society have recently been awarded a £778,000 grant. Operation Phoenix hopes in the coming months to raise £286,000 worth of additional matching funds for the grant, the majority of which is going to be spent on the on-going development at Holt. Which when finish, will recreate an extensive period Edwardian station at High Kelling. Hard to believe that the area was once just a railway cutting! |
