6–7th May 175th Anniversary Steam Gala
To celebrate 175 years since the opening of the line from Whitby to Pickering, the NYMR's Spring Steam Gala was held over 10 days from 29th April to 8th May. With 13 locos in steam during our visit alone there was certainly plenty to see. Star guest was BR 8P 71000 Duke of Gloucester, making its second visit to the line. Also visiting was 4MT tank 80072 from the Llangollen Railway and representing 'prehistoric steam' were Rocket and Planet, which were giving rides at Pickering and Levisham respectively. Friday (6th) saw all five Black 5s currently at the Moors in steam: 44767 George Stephenson, 44871, 45212, 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier, 45428 Eric Treacy. Probably the first time so many of the class have been in traffic together since the end of steam. The remaining locos in service during our visit were: GWR 56xx 6619; SR S15 825; LNER A4 Sir Nigel Gresley, J72 69023; BR 4MT 76079 (masquerading as 76084), 9F 92214 Cock O' The North.
